The honest comparison
Ten factors that decide what a job really costs and how it really goes — across all four ways to get it done. These are business categories, not named companies; where an option varies, we say so.

Follow the Invoice
Where does your money go?
The invoice is only half the story. The same $1,000 repair keeps very different company depending on who you hand it to — here's what actually happens to it, category by category.
With Power Pro
Your dollars stay in the neighborhoods we serve
Power Pro is family-owned and has been dispatched from Southern California for more than 20 years — today from three local offices in Cerritos, Gardena, and Anaheim. What you pay funds local payroll, the weekly training our technicians get, and the trucks parked in your own zip code — not a marketing budget three time zones away.
Some of it goes further than that. Through Speak Joy, the 501(c)(3) we support with 95.9 FM The Fish, and our Community Outreach Team, Power Pro has handed out toys at elementary schools in Compton and Gardena, donated 24,000 water bottles across six SoCal high-school graduations, and delivered 100 Thanksgiving turkeys to the Saint Margaret Center in Inglewood. You can also hear our founder tell the whole story on The Catalyst for the Trades.
With investor-owned brands
When the owner is a fund, the fund gets paid first
A growing share of home-service brands are owned by private-equity firms and national consolidators. The local name often stays on the trucks after a buyout, but the business now answers to a financial target — and the incentives tend to follow: revenue goals per visit, memberships engineered around future sales, and a nudge toward replacement when a repair would do.
To be fair: none of that makes the technician at your door a bad plumber. It changes the incentives above them — and it means a slice of every invoice leaves Southern California for the investors who own the brand. If you're not sure who owns a company, ask. It's a fair question, and an honest company will answer it.
With the cheapest bid
A too-low price is usually a cost that moved — not one that vanished
Insurance, workers' compensation, permits, real warranties, and a staffed 24/7 phone line all cost money. When a bid comes in far below everyone else's, those things are usually what got left out — which means the risk didn't disappear, it moved onto you. An uninsured injury on your property, an unpermitted install flagged at resale, or a failed repair with no one answering the callback all cost more than the difference you saved.
That's not a reason to fear every low quote — some lean solo operators are genuinely excellent. It's a reason to make any bidder pass the same checklist: license number, proof of insurance, the price in writing, and who answers when something goes wrong.
Either way
Four questions to ask anyone who bids your job
- What's your CSLB license number? Verify it at cslb.ca.gov — ours is #766254.
- Will I get the exact price in writing before work starts? "We'll see once we're in there" is not a price.
- Who answers your phone at 2 a.m. — and does that call cost extra? (Ours doesn't. Ever.)
- Who owns the company, and where do the profits go? There's no wrong answer — but you deserve a straight one.
Any honest company — us included — should welcome all four.

Honest answers
Is a big national chain safer than a local company like Power Pro?
Not inherently. Large chains are typically licensed and insured — and so are we (CA License #766254, verifiable at cslb.ca.gov). The real differences are ownership and incentives: who sets the technician's targets, whether after-hours calls cost extra, and where the profits end up. Check any company's license, get the price in writing, and judge the answers — not the size of the ad budget.
Why is the one-truck operator's bid so much cheaper?
Usually because overhead you'd actually want is missing from it — insurance, workers' compensation, permits, warranty reserves, and a staffed phone line. When those are skipped, the risk moves onto you rather than disappearing. Some solo pros are genuinely excellent and fairly priced, so we won't pretend otherwise: verify the license, ask for proof of insurance, and get the exact price in writing before anyone starts.
When is DIY actually the right call?
More often than a service company likes to admit: plunging a simple clog, replacing a faucet aerator, swapping thermostat batteries, or resetting a tripped disposal are all safe wins. Where we draw the line is gas lines, refrigerant, slab leaks, sewer repairs, and water heater installs — those carry real safety risk and usually require permits, and unpermitted work can surface at inspection or resale. If you're unsure which side of the line your job is on, call us and ask — the answer is free.
How do I verify Power Pro's license — or anyone else's?
Look it up on the California Contractors State License Board at cslb.ca.gov using the license number or business name. Ours is #766254 under Power Pro Plumbing, Heating & Air. Every legitimate California contractor has a CSLB number and will give it to you without hesitating — treat any reluctance as your answer.
What is Power Pro's free second opinion and how does it work?
Bring us any quote — from another contractor or even an AI cost estimate — and a licensed tech will evaluate the diagnosis and the price against what your home actually needs, free, with our honest read in writing. If the original number is fair, we'll say so. Call (833) 212-2124 or book online; we serve LA & Orange County 24/7 from Cerritos, Gardena, and Anaheim.
Does Power Pro charge extra for nights, weekends, or holidays?
No — never. Real people answer our phones 24/7, same-day service is available across Los Angeles & Orange County, and the price for the work is the same at 2 a.m. Sunday as it is at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
