How a heat pump works

Every mini-split is a heat pump.

Every mini-split IS a heat pump — the wall head heats and cools through the same reversal trick. Here's how it works.

hot refrigerant cool refrigerant

Reversing valve — the part that flips the seasons.

In summer — Cooling

Right now it's an air conditioner: heat is being pulled out of the house and thrown away outside.

  1. 1 Absorb. Refrigerant in the indoor coil soaks up heat from your indoor air — the blower pushes the now-cooler air through the ducts.
  2. 2 Compress. The compressor squeezes the refrigerant, concentrating that heat.
  3. 3 Release. The hot refrigerant dumps its heat outdoors through the outdoor coil — that's the warm blast you feel next to the unit.
  4. 4 Expand & repeat. The refrigerant expands, chills back down, and heads inside for more.

In winter — Heating

Now it's a heater: the same machine grabs heat from the outdoor air and pushes it inside.

  1. 1 Absorb. Refrigerant in the outdoor coil soaks up heat from the outside air — yes, even a 48° morning holds plenty of heat energy.
  2. 2 Compress. The compressor squeezes the refrigerant, which raises its temperature sharply.
  3. 3 Release. The now-hot refrigerant releases that heat into your air at the indoor coil, and the blower sends it through the house.
  4. 4 Expand & repeat. The refrigerant expands, cools, and heads back outside for more.

Ductless questions, answered

Is a ductless system right for my home? +

Ductless shines in homes without existing ductwork, room additions, converted garages, ADUs, and rooms that central air can't keep comfortable. If you want room-by-room control or lower operating costs, it's worth a look — we offer free in-home consultations to size it up honestly.

How long does a ductless installation take? +

Most single- and dual-zone installations are done in one day. Multi-zone whole-home projects can take a bit longer depending on the number of indoor units and the routing of refrigerant lines.

Do mini splits heat as well as cool? +

Yes. Mini splits are heat pumps, so the same system cools in summer and heats in winter — and modern units are very efficient in SoCal's mild winter temperatures.

Do I need a permit for a mini split in California? +

Yes — mechanical permits are required for mini split installations, and depending on your jurisdiction, HERS verification may apply. We pull the proper permits and handle the paperwork as part of every installation.
